Why a Consultation is Important

A consultation is crucial to ensure you’re a suitable candidate for laser eye surgery. We conduct a full medical assessment of your eyes to maximize the benefits of the procedure and confirm your eyes are healthy enough for surgery. This includes evaluating your:

  • Eye Health: Checking for conditions like infections or diseases that may affect surgery outcomes.
  • Corneal Thickness: Measuring to determine suitability for procedures like LASIK.
  • Stable Vision: Ensuring your prescription has been stable for at least one year.
  • Overall Health: Assessing for systemic conditions that could affect healing.
Important Note

To proceed with laser eye surgery, you must be over eighteen years old and in good health. Your eyes must be healthy and free from injuries or infections, such as pinkeye. Individuals with eye conditions like glaucoma, cataracts, keratoconus, or retinal and optic nerve diseases are not candidates for eye surgery. It’s also important that certain autoimmune or degenerative conditions, like Sjogren’s syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, and type one diabetes, are well-managed before surgery.

Pregnancy is another consideration; if you are pregnant, you must wait up to six months postpartum, as hormonal changes can alter the shape of your cornea. Finally, your prescription must be stable for at least one year before you have laser surgery.

LASIK vs. PRK

LASIK and PRK are the two most common laser vision correction options. Most patients who undergo laser eye surgery choose one of these two options unless there are other concerns or conditions that are better addressed using other vision correction surgeries.

LASIK

LASIK stands for laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis. During this type of laser eye surgery, your surgeon will first cut a flap in the cornea. Then, a computer-guided laser will reshape your cornea to correct your vision. Recovery usually takes one to two days, but many patients see vision improvement right away.

PRK

PRK, photorefractive keratectomy, is another type of laser surgery that is often recommended to patients who aren’t suitable candidates for LASIK. The main difference between PRK and LASIK is that, in PRK, surgeons do not create a corneal flap. First, they remove the top layer of the cornea (the epithelium); then, a laser corrects vision. The recovery time is around one week, with vision improvement within two weeks. Because of the longer healing time, PRK is usually only recommended for patients with thin corneas or other special considerations, like extremely active lifestyles, as there is no chance of flap-related complications.
