Eye Exams vs. Vision Tests

Some optical stores may offer vision tests to update your prescription, but it’s important to know that this is not the same as a comprehensive eye exam. A vision test does not include a medical evaluation of your eyes and can’t detect disease. While vision tests can detect changes to your vision, they cannot detect the underlying cause of your vision changes.

If you are experiencing vision changes, it’s crucial you visit an optometrist for a full medical evaluation of your eyes. A comprehensive eye exam will include various tests to detect eye disease, including:

  • Analysis of your medical history and visual needs
  • Measurement of visual acuity
  • Binocular vision assessment
  • Assessment of your eye’s internal structures
  • Neurological assessment of the visual system

Using this information, your optometrist can determine the cause of your vision changes and recommend the appropriate treatment.

Wellness Exams For Your Health

Our practice is committed to protecting your eye health with the most advanced technology available, and we are excited to announce that our comprehensive eye exam now includes the Wellness Exam.

The Wellness Exam is state-of-the-art technology that allows our doctors to see beneath the surface of your retina, where signs of disease may first appear. Traditional eye exams and retinal photography do not provide this level of detail.

Did you know?

  • Sight-threatening eye diseases often have no outward signs or symptoms in the early stages.
  • State-of-the-art technology can help your doctor see early signs of these diseases.
  • Early detection and treatment of eye disease may reduce your risk of vision loss.
  • Regular iWellness exams can help your doctor detect common eye diseases.

When to Get an Eye Exam

The Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends that adults aged twenty to sixty-four get an eye exam every two years while seniors aged sixty-five or over should get an eye exam once per year.

However, we recommend that you visit the optometrist at least once per year. Annual eye exams allow us to closely monitor your eye health for vision changes and other early signs of disease like cataracts, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration.

OHIP covers one eye exam per year for seniors age 65 and over. For adults under age 65, OHIP covers eye exams every 12 months for those with certain medical conditions and eye diseases.

Medical Care for Your Eyes

Your vision and eye care needs change as you age, which is one reason why regular eye exams are so important. From prescription updates to early disease detection, eye exams help ensure you’re seeing clearly and maintaining good eye health.
