Contact Lens Exams & Fitting

Finding the right contact lenses for you begins with a contact lens exam, which includes a full medical evaluation of your eyes to determine which contact lenses could work for you. We also look for special considerations, like dry eye, that might influence our contact lens choice. Finally, we update your prescription, so your contact lenses give you the clearest vision possible.

After the exam, we move onto the fitting. During the fitting, we measure the shape of your eye to get an initial idea of which type of contact lens will fit you best. We use techniques like Medmont corneal topography, which maps your cornea with an accuracy of two microns. For fitting specialty lenses, such as scleral lenses, we also use anterior segment imaging and OCT, which gives us a clear picture of the angle, slope, and thickness of your cornea.

Following the contact lens exam and fitting, we will have a thorough understanding of which contact lenses are best for you based on your unique needs. We will supply you with a pair of lenses that you’ll wear for a trial period. Once we’ve established that they are comfortable and provide you with clear vision, we will write you a prescription for the lenses. If you’re happy with your new contact lenses, you can easily order more contacts online when the time comes.

Specialized Contact Lens Options

Orthokeratology, often referred to as Ortho-K, is a non-surgical method of reshaping the cornea. The ortho-k contact lenses are worn overnight, and the lenses gently reshape your cornea while you sleep so you can enjoy clear, crisp vision the next day.

With regular wear, you won’t need to wear glasses or contacts to correct your vision as you go about your daily activities. Patients who don’t want to wear glasses or contact lenses during the day may be a good fit for ortho-k lenses. Ortho-k lenses can also be a treatment option for those with astigmatism.

Through the use of ortho-k, like BE FREE, and Paragon CRT lens designs, myopia progression can be managed.

Scleral contact lenses are a specialty contact lens with a unique fit designed for patients that can’t wear traditional contact lenses. Unlike traditional contact lenses, which rest on the cornea, scleral contact lenses rest on the sclera (the white of the eye), creating a fluid reservoir between the contact lens and the cornea, which smooths corneal irregularities to provide clearer vision. Patients with the following vision concerns may benefit from scleral lenses:

Because the fluid reservoir helps to smooth corneal irregularities, scleral contact lenses can help those with irregularly shaped corneas achieve clear vision. Patients with astigmatism and keratoconus may benefit from scleral contact lenses. Scleral contact lenses can also work for patients who require contact lenses after surgery, including laser eye surgery, corneal transplant surgery, or radial keratotomy surgery.

Additionally, patients with dry eye can also benefit from the use of scleral lenses. The fluid reservoir the lens creates helps to keep your eyes hydrated, especially for patients whose eyes are too dry for conventional contact lenses.

We offer a variety of scleral lenses, including mini scleral and ultra-thin scleral lenses, to provide you with the right scleral lenses for your needs.

MiSight® contact lenses are a 1-day disposable lens designed specifically for myopia management. Myopia, or nearsightedness, affects approximately 30% of Canadians and often becomes worse with age. With myopia management methods, such as multifocal contact lenses, the progression of myopia can be reduced.

Multifocal lenses, such as MiSight® contact lenses, contain multiple prescriptions throughout the lens. The multiple prescriptions are thought to reduce eye strain during near vision tasks like reading; a factor that may contribute to the progression of myopia. When compared to the use of single-vision contact lenses, MiSight® multifocal contact lenses can slow the worsening of myopia by as much as 50%.
